Witness A Car Accident? Here’s What You Can Do

Introducing Evertree Mountain States

Do you know what you should do if you witness a car accident? There are quite a few things that you should do to keep yourself safe and help the victims. By being a first responder, you can make a dramatic impact in the lives of the people who are involved in the accident.

Call 911

Call 911 immediately. Don’t assume anyone else has called because it could be what everyone has done. Tell the operator where the accident is and what has happened. Try and be as detailed as you can while talking in a calm manner.

Secure Your Own Car

Secure your car at least 100 feet from the accident, on the side of the road.

Secure the Other Cars

Try and secure the other cars involved. This can be done by putting the cars in park, turning off the ignitions, and even getting them onto the side of the road.

Check on the Victims

Check on the victims and let them know that help is on the way. If people can get out, encourage them to do so. Don’t try and move anyone who cannot move themselves because it could make an injury worse. You also never want to admit fault to anyone, even if it is to calm a victim.

Leave a Statement

You witnessed the accident and therefore the police are likely to have questions for you. Answer as thoroughly and honestly as possible. If for any reason you are unable to stay until help arrives, leave your contact information with the victims so the police can follow up as necessary.
